When will the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection be discontinued?Bad news about the
Nintendo Wii: Nintendo will be shutting down the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Service for the Wii and the DS starting from the 20th of May 2014. This means you won't be able to play your favorite games online anymore.
Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl,
Mario Strikers Charged Football... They will no longer be playable online.
Will the Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop be affected?Although the Wi-Fi Connection Service will be offline, it will not have any impact on the Wii Shop Channel and the Nintendo DSi Shop. Certain parts of the Wii Shop Channel and the DSi Shop had already been discontinued for a while, but remained usable. Fortunately, this will not be restricted further from the 20th of May 2014.
Which other features will be taken offline? With the Wi-Fi services being taken offline, you will no longer be able to use minor features like sending messages or even emails. All features that required an internet connection will no longer be usable from the 20th of May 2014. Services such as
Wii Speak and the related Wii Speak Channel unfortunately will no longer function. It seems like a tactical move by Nintendo to finally encourage loyal Wii owners to transition to Nintendo's current HD console: the Wii U.
